I had a book in me. I knew I could write it, but I just couldn't
take on all the stages of making it a good-looking book-- good editing,
interesting lay-out, elegant cover design, readable formatting,
publicity, and whatever else it takes to bring my manuscript from A4
sheets to a presentable book.
Give up, or what? |

Keep presenting my manuscript to one publisher after another, and
continue accummulating rejection slips? Or leave the sheets with all the
other effects that my family will sort out when I'm gone?
book had to come right now, in the bicentennial year of Louis Braille's
birth as it is a celebration of his tactile reading and writing. The
stories of people who have been empowered by being braille-literate.
This book belongs with the other ways his bicentenary is being
celebrated.
Self-publishing was the answer, but I didn't want any of the
responsibilities I could foresee in arriving at a satisfying book.
Palmer Higgs Author Services took me on. After my first contact with
Paul I felt his integrity, and chose to hand the project over. We had a
couple of meetings, and some phone calls. Paul and Debbie spoke at a
meeting of the Society of Women Writers, in Melbourne, and I felt even
more confirmed in my choice of publisher.
With little pain, and much gain, and some creative publicity, and much
support, I have launched my book, and feel proud of it. All the facets
of producing a book have been taken care of, with a more satisfying
outcome than I would have sought of my own accord. I feel that Palmer
Higgs cared about my book. This has been a good experience for me. I can
trust the welbeing of my work to Palmer Higgs.
