Amanda Hocking - my hero
I really like Amanda Hocking. Not because of her work (nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea), not because she’s made eBooks and self-publishing recognised phenomena (although that doesn’t displease me as one who has been banging on about the opportunities in self-publishing for ages – probably not to any effect, but that doesn’t stop me) but because she is resisting being drawn into a non-existent battle.
There should be no one-upmanship between self-publishing and publishing. The world has moved on – there is room for all models or a hybrid of models to enable all authors of all genres to get their work out there to be judged by the public.
We (authors, publishers, self-publishing services companies, bloggers, Writers’ Centres and on and on....) really all want the same thing; to create great writing and get it out there for people to enjoy. There is no guarantee of success for anyone but there should also be no barriers.
Let’s just get over ourselves and get on with it.
In a recent interview with the Huffington Post UK, Amanda says;
“People view it as a battle between self-publishing and traditional publishing, but I don’t feel that way, and nor do a lot of writers”
“We should be working together. The goal as a writer is to get our work to readers. Publishing is a means to an end, not what it’s all about.”
Hear, hear
